His Excellency,

DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY IN ESUT MAY LOSE ACCREDITATION
The Department of Sociology may fail the on-coming accreditation due to internal wrangling, squabbles and bickering in the department promoted by a section of the top level management of ESUT with the active involvement of the Registrar, Barr Chris Igbokwe, and the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Alloysius Emengini Uzoagulu. The active involvement and meddling of these top level management members in the crises in that department is with the sole objective and purpose of keeping Prof Chinweuba Owo, Professor of Sociology, and one time Personal Assistant to the former Vice Chancellor, Prof Sam Chukwu, perpetually on the outskirts of power in ESUT.

This explains why since his stint as Personal Assistant to the then Vice Chancellor, this Professor, eminent for his articulate views on the floors of Senate and ASUU has never been appointed Head of his department. His aspiration to be the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences was effectively truncated by this same cabal who hurriedly promoted Dr Mrs Regina Eya to professorial rank even though her promotion to professorial rank had been long overdue. However, the hurry in that promotion was to enable her assume the Deanship of that Faculty and checkmate Prof. Owo’s deanship ambition. The truncation of the aspiration of this professor of Sociology from being Dean of his faculty by the management is one of several evils, injustices, sectionalism, nepotism and corruption plaguing ESUT.

Currently, in renewed desperate efforts to promote Dr Mrs Ntude, one of the sacred cows of ESUT management, who is facing the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee, this same Prof C. Owo was approached by the Committee to allow the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee for their case to dissolve and become a ‘peace mission’ so that Dr Ntude’s appraisal and promotion to professor of sociology rank could proceed despite her pending disciplinary case. The Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof A.E. Uzoagulu, connived with Dr Mrs Ntude to write new petitions alleging sexual harassment of students of sociology in 2001 - 2003 against Prof C. Owo! This is notwithstanding that there are no known petitions against this professor from anywhere alleging sexual harassment.

Dr Mrs Ntude had been indicted in 2005 or thereabout by Prof Onoh led senior staff disciplinary committee and the indictment for that offence was ratified by the David Ogbodo led Governing Council which noted the absence of appropriate sanctions/punishments for that offence, and then directed that the matter be referred back to the Disciplinary Committee for the purpose of recommending appropriate punishment. Shortly afterwards the disciplinary committee was reconstituted. Rather than keep to their terms of reference, the Prof Uzoagulu lorded Disciplinary Committee has gone on in a bid to protect Dr Mrs Ntude, by fair or foul means, to see how Prof Owo could be convicted of invented offences and punished together with Dr Mrs Ntude, for being a petition writer.

When has petition writing become an offence?!

Another is the illegal imposition of an outsider, a senior lecturer in psychology, Dr Mrs Omeje who is not eligible to be a lecturer in sociology as the Ag Head of Department of Sociology. Dr Mrs Omeje has no first degree in sociology and by the NUC rules for appointment of academic staff, is not qualified to be an academic staff of the department of sociology. This appointment is sufficient reason why the department will fail the on coming accreditation of her programs. One wonders how this woman can earn the respect, and command the loyalty of departmental members, being an outsider and an imposed person. That improper appointment of Dr. Mrs Omeje which was pointed out by Prof Owo during the interactive session held by the Pro-Chancellor with the academic and senior administrative and professional staff of ESUT thoroughly embarrassed the Vice Chancellor, Prof Onyeji who confessed his ignorance and lack of knowledge of that improper appointment of Dr Mrs Omeje as Ag HOD of Sociology. Since the Vice Chancellor confessed ignorance of the facts of that appointment, who made the appointment? Who recommended the appointment? Is the Vice Chancellor really telling the truth since he knows that the same Dr Mrs Omeje is also the Ag HOD of Psychology?

This further elucidates how headship and other appointments are made under Prof C.O. Onyeji and how the Vice Chancellor is a lackey, lacking in knowledge in almost every sensitive issues in ESUT. How will a vice chancellor not be sure of the qualifications of a candidate for HOD appointment? Does he not look at the personal files of the candidates? Why must he rely solely on the opinion of his deputy, Prof Uzoagulu and Registrar Barr Chris Igbokwe who definitely have their own individual agenda?

It is heartrending that a citadel of learning in the magnitude of a university should be administered by clumsy persona who has exhibited unmitigated thoughtlessness in a wide range of sensitive matter. No wonder his subordinates play him like a pawn and make jest of his office.

We appeal that ESUT should be saved and spared from this consequential maladies of rancour, personal aggrandisement, maladministration, thoughtlessness of its leaders and self-acclaim power brokers.
God bless ESUT.
